The National House of Chiefs is urging the appropriate authorities to take immediate action to assist the thousands of Volta Region inhabitants who have been seriously impacted by the recent floods brought on by the spillage of the Akosombo dam.

Vice President Naa Puowelle Karbo III underlined the need for prompt action during a National House of Chiefs Meeting that was held in Kumasi.

He pleaded with the authorities to relocate those impacted by the flooding.

“Several citizens of Ghana are being displaced by the release of water from the Akosombo dam and the torrential rains that occurred. We want to say, on behalf of Nananom, the National House of Chiefs, that we commiserate with our many citizens who have been affected. We urge all agencies responsible for ensuring proper resettlement and bringing relief to these citizens and take action to ease their suffering.”

“We, therefore, commiserate with all our citizens affected in the Volta Region, Greater Accra, the Oti Region, and other parts of the country. We pray all the agencies will take the necessary actions and bring relief,” he appealed.

The Ghana Navy has disclosed that over 8,000 people have been rescued from flood-stricken areas as a result of the destructive spillage from the Akosombo Dam.

Commodore EA Kwafo from the Naval Training Command during an update on the floods at Mepe in the Volta Region said the combined rescue team deployed to the affected districts is currently monitoring critical infrastructure and responding to distress calls to neutralize the effect of the damage caused by the spillage.

“We are monitoring critical infrastructure as well as responding to distress calls from the district assemblies, VRA, and NADMO and we have been rescuing people on the water”.
