On March 4, 2025, a significant cocaine cargo was intercepted by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), which confiscated about 3.3 tons of the illegal drug that was traveling from the Western Region to Accra.

NIB officers acted on intelligence and found 143 bags of cocaine concealed under sand when they pulled up a dump truck at Pedu Junction in Cape Coast.

Two suspects who were driving from Takoradi to Weija were found inside the truck and were taken into custody right away.

The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) conducted field testing and determined that the drug was raw cocaine, weighing 2,974 kg at the time of the initial seizure.

On March 8, after conducting additional investigations, police arrived at a suspect’s home and found 13 more bags and another bag of suspected cocaine, totaling 345.07 kilograms.

The Ghana Standards Authority and NACOC’s laboratory examinations verified the shipment’s 3,319.68 kg total weight and purity levels ranging from 50% to 70%.

It is thought that the cocaine, which is worth more than $350 million on the black market, entered Ghana via fishing boats.

3news reports that two suspects, Kenneth Cobbinah and Isaac Quaicoe, have been placed under remand in detention and are expected to return to court on April 2, 2025.

In order to guarantee that everyone involved is held accountable, the NIB has identified more suspects who are still at large and is actively working to get them arrested.
