The Ashanti Regional office of the National Security Secretariat has initiated a targeted operation to crack down on commercial transport operators imposing unauthorized fares throughout the Greater Kumasi.

The activity, conducted by the Ashanti Regional Security Liaison Officer, Capt. (Rtd.) Kwame Jabari engages over 20 staff members from the regional office, backed by security teams at the district level.

The operation focuses on commercial drivers, conductors, and loaders who unlawfully raise transport fares, with those caught to be detained and referred to the Ghana Police Service for legal action.

As stated by National Security, the program seeks to alleviate traffic jams and lessen the strain on travelers.

Capt. Jabari mentioned that the Secretariat is collaborating with Metro Mass Transit to offer transport services from certain communities to Kejetia and other locations as part of initiatives to stabilize fares and promote orderly operations at bus terminals.

“We are going to partner with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), we are going to partner with the police, arrest those who are charging illegal prices and ensure there is sanctity within the bus terminals,” he said.

He mentioned that the operation has already started, with security teams stationed at different bus terminals during busy times.

“We are commencing today, so we will be working in the mornings and evenings.”

“Capt. Jabari mentioned that a team will be present at the different bus terminals early in the morning.”

National Security states that maintaining its officers at transport hubs is anticipated to discourage unlawful fare increases and provide relief to travelers in Greater Kumasi.
