Over 60 FM broadcasting stations nationwide, including well-known stations like Asaase Radio and Wontumi FM, have been ordered to immediately cease operations by the National Communications Authority (NCA) due to numerous regulatory violations.
Stations operating with expired authorizations, unpaid license payments, or noncompliance with set-up requirements outlined in the Electronic Communications Act and its implementing rules are the targets of the enforcement action.
The drive, which was intended to restore order and respect to broadcasting rules, was prompted by a recent NCA audit that found widespread non-compliance and was supported by a government mandate.
Asaase Radio, which broadcasts on 99.5 FM, is currently off air.
28 were found to be operating with expired authorisations.
14 received authorisation but failed to set up operations within two years, breaching regulatory timelines.
13 are operating under provisional authorisation, despite having paid the required fees.
7 stations paid provisional fees, but final authorisation is pending due to non-fulfilment of requirements under Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations.
The NCA reassured the public that the agency will keep up its monitoring and enforcement activities while restating that all broadcasters must adhere to their licensing requirements in full in order to continue operating.
