Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate in the recently concluded election, has informed party supporters that their party was the one that handed the election to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking to party officials and supporters from the Korle Klottey constituency who had contacted him, he noted that the party’s vote total decreased in contrast to his opponent, whose votes were roughly equal to those from the previous election.
“I want to encourage you all to see that we handed this election over to the NDC. They didn’t win this outright. Their numbers didn’t change from 2020. Ours have dropped by 40% so the analysis is simple,” he informed them at home.
Since the defeat was self-inflicted, the vice president said, it would be their responsibility to come together and go forward in order to create a competitive party in 2028.
He acknowledged the disappointment and suffering that the NPP followers were going through and stated that it was time for the party to reflect and be tolerant of one another’s opinions.
With 267 constituency results available, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Mahama received 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of the total valid votes cast, according to the Electoral Commission’s announcement of the presidential election results. 4,657,304 votes were cast for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
But in the 2020 presidential election, former President Mahama received just over 6.2 million of the total legitimate votes, while President Akufo-Addo’s NPP received almost 6.7 million.
Dr. Bawumia was pointing out that in just four years, his party had lost more than two million votes.
He gave Mr. Mahama a call on Sunday morning to congratulate him on his overwhelming win and to promise to support his return to Jubilee House.
