The major opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is to begin accepting candidates in 18 constituencies where elections had previously been postponed because of unsolved issues.
On May 13, 2023, the party held its internal elections across the country to choose the party’s presidential and legislative candidates for the forthcoming general election in 2024.
However, it was necessary to postpone the 18 constituency elections.
The NDC’s acting director of elections, Mr. Daniel Amartey Mensah, has stated that the affected constituencies’ nomination periods will begin on Tuesday, August 1, 2023.
He clarified that while polls were not held in some of the impacted constituencies, nominations were allowed in others but no elections were held at all.
Following is a breakdown of the impacted constituencies by region: There are 18 constituencies altogether, including four in the Ashanti Region, two in the Central Region, one in the Western North, five in the Eastern Region, two in Greater Accra, three in the Western Region, and one in the Ahafo Region.
In the Ashanti Region, there are the constituencies of Mampong, Adansi Asokwa, Manhyia South, and Fomena.
They are Effutu and Gomoa Central for the Central Region and Sefwi Akontombra for the Western North.
Abuakwa South, Akwatia, Lower West Akim, Afram Plains South, and Ayensuano are the constituencies of Eastern Region.
They are Ayawaso West Wuogon and Odododiodio in the Greater Accra Region.
Amenfi East, Tarkwa Nsuaem, and Evalue Ajomoro Gwira are the seats in the Western Region, while Tano North is the constituency in the Ahafo Region.
Mr. Mensah emphasized that the party’s list of parliamentary candidates for the 2024 general election would be complete if elections were held in these 18 unfilled constituencies.
Initially, the Santrokofi-Akpafu-Lolobi-Likpe (SALL) region was one of 276 constituencies where the NDC intended to hold parliamentary elections.
However, events transpired that caused the polls in the 18 constituencies to be suspended.
