NDC postpones Odododiodio parliamentary elections over court injunction

Due to a court order obtained by a disqualified candidate, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has decided to postpone the parliamentary primaries in the Odododiodio constituency indefinitely.

The fundamental problem stems from Michael Nii Yarboi Annan’s disqualification from running in the Odododiodioo Constituency parliamentary election in November 2023 by the NDC’s Functional Executive Committee (FEC).

In a report released last year, the NDC clarified that the conclusions of the special committee that the party’s Functional Executive Committee had formed supported Mr. Annan’s disqualification from running in the party’s parliamentary primary in the Odododiodoo Constituency.

The party claims that in light of the evidence submitted, the special committee was unable to support Mr. Annan’s eligibility to compete in the Odododiodoo constituency parliamentary primaries under Article 41(8)(b) of the NDC Constitution, which states that, “a member must be an active member of the party at the constituency level for the four years immediately preceding the date of filing nominations”.

The party’s general secretary, Mr. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, declared in a statement dated January 17, 2024 that all activities pertaining to the constituency’s primaries would be temporarily suspended.

The court granted an interlocutory injunction prohibiting the NDC from holding the election until the matter was resolved after the disqualified candidate challenged the decision to bar him from running in the primary.

The NDC clarified that the party’s FEC decided to postpone the election indefinitely at a meeting on January 16, 2024.

Additionally, the party asked all executives of branches and constituencies to uphold harmony and peace until further notice.

Since then, the party has expressed regret for any inconvenience the postponement may have caused and assured members that they will notify them as soon as a new date for the primaries has been set.
