The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) member running as an independent candidate are challenging the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 23rd May 2023 Kumawu by-election.

The Party on Sunday 23rd April 2023 elected Ernest Yaw Anim a native of Kumawu Bodomase as their parliamentary candidate to face the NDC’s prepared candidate, Kwasi Amankwa, grandson of the late Sekyere Kumawu Member of Parliament (MP) Philip Atta Basoa and Kwaku Duah an Independent Candidate, a Nephew to the Paramount Chief of the Kumawu, Barimah Tweneboah Koduah.

Bernard Antwi Boasiako, better known as “Chairman Wontumi,” chairman of the party for Ashanti, addressed NPP members following a victorious primary at Kumawu Besore. He promised the party leadership and members a resounding victory in the by-election.

He promised to run a tight-knit campaign in the district, leaving no room for maneuver for the NDC candidate and the independent candidate who is being supported by the NDC going into the by-election.

As the regional chairman guiding the party into this by-election, I can attest that the NDC candidate a former NPP member who revolted against us to run as an independent candidate supported by the NDC behind the scenes is currently helpless and weak. This is so because the independent NDC candidate who has been bought is from Bosodomase, where our candidate Ernest Yaw Anim was born. As a result, the independent candidate is no longer a threat to us and cannot defeat us.

He assured the party, “So he is in this contest to pay school fees but not to make a substantial influence against us.
