In protest of Mr. Godfred Amoo’s selection as the Ministry’s chief director, a large contingent of National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters stormed the Ministry of Roads and Highways early on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

The demonstrators, who were clearly upset, said that Mr. Amoo’s appointment went against an order from President-elect John Dramani Mahama’s Transition Team, which called for a suspension of all transfers, promotions, payments, and hiring during the transition.

According to reports, Mr. Amoo was elevated to succeed Alhaji Abass Awula, the outgoing Chief Director of the Ministry, and is currently the Director of the Urban Roads Department and Acting Chief Executive Officer of the recently established Ghana Roads Authority.

The group’s spokesperson, Mr. Imoro Abdul Karim, accused outgoing Roads and Highways Minister Mr. Francis Asenso-Boakye of ignoring the transition orders and questioned his actions in an interview with Classfmonline.com.

We’re here to express our disapproval of Mr. Godfred Amoo’s promotion.

The incoming government is unnecessarily burdened by this decision.

Given an explicit mandate to stop such acts, why would Mr. Asenso-Boakye proceed with this appointment? Mr. Karim stated.

The demonstrators pointed out that after their demonstration, Mr. Amoo failed to show up to take up the role.

They urged the Ministry to abide by the Transition Team’s recommendations and avoid making impromptu adjustments that would cause problems for the future administration.

With NDC supporters promising to be vigilant in protecting President-elect Mahama’s team’s orders, this development exacerbates already rising tensions as the power transition moves underway.
