Officials from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) reportedly engaged in a standoff with Rev. Ntim Fordjour, the Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, on April 9 in an effort to arrest him, according to reports that reached Ghanatodayonline.com.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the government spokesperson, claimed that Rev. Fordjour’s refusal to comply was the reason behind the impasse.
“NIB officials are currently at Ntim Fordjour’s residence. They have arrest warrant. He is refusing to cooperate. They have given him time to cooperate, failing which they will act,” he said.
Justin Koduah Frimpong, the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), had earlier stated on his Facebook page that the “N.I.B currently at Hon. Ntim Fordjour’s house to arrest him. #SAY NO TO STATE INTIMIDATION.”
Rev. Ntim Fordjour has said that two flights that just touched down in the nation were engaged in illegal narcotics trafficking and money laundering. Since then, he has urged the administration to look into the situation and speak to the public about it.
Felix Kwakye-Ofosu, the government’s spokesperson, responded to his remarks during a press briefing in Parliament, denying the accusations and calling them untrue.
He clarified that small technical issues and other valid grounds were the reason the plane had landed in the nation.
Since then, the development has caused political conflict between the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
A few political leaders and security experts have demanded that Rev. Fordjour be taken into custody so that he can be questioned further.
