The National Media Commission (NMC) has taken significant steps to rid the media of all fast money advertisements from some established organizations.

On Tuesday, October 31, 2023, some of the steps taken by the commission to purify the content of Ghana’s media landscape were formally released.

The initiative’s main thrust is the creation of the Broadcasting Monitoring Center, a professional organization entrusted with the control of objectionable media material. Toll-free service has already been launched, though, and this will encourage more informed viewers of the mainstream media.

After a significant stakeholder consultative meeting in 2021, the NMC and NCA decided to oppose the broadcast of offensive content in the media. In light of the increasing number of questionable people using the airwaves, everyone in this discussion agreed that regulatory action was necessary.

The information minister was among those in attendance at the National Media Commission’s new initiative launch. She emphasized the need to strike a balance between regulatory tasks and the right to free speech, and she explicitly said that national resources should be used efficiently.

“First, I want to congratulate both the NMC for NCA for this collaboration. It is an efficient use of the scarce national resources that we have. In manner places, you see an attempt to duplicate but you have collaborated and you’re saving all of us some money and I want to congratulate you for that,” the Minister said.

The Monitoring Center was established by the NCA and NMC in an effort to create standards in response to the growing number of egregious broadcasting material complaints, according to Mr. Boadu-Ayeboafoh, Chairman of the NMC.
