A “Service of Preparation” at the Holy Spirit Cathedral preceded the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra’s protest walk against galamsey, or illicit mining. The protest walk is now taking place.

Catholic worshippers, environmentalists, and members of the public all came to the ceremony, united in their desire to put a stop to the devastation caused by galamsey.

Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi, SVD, spoke to the audience during the ceremony and pleaded for divine assistance in the struggle against environmental degradation.

He exhorted attendees to keep up their advocacy in order to safeguard Ghana’s natural riches and guarantee the country’s sustainability in the future.

During the demonstration, protesters held signs denouncing illicit mining operations. Among them were members of the group “Crusaders Against Galamsey.”

In order to maintain order, the demonstrators marched calmly along pre-designated paths under the direction of police officials.

Emmanuel Wilson Jr., the leader of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey,” emphasized the necessity of stronger long-term efforts to battle galamsey.

The president’s order for the military and small-scale miners to solve the matter was acknowledged, but he emphasized that the only way to really protect Ghana’s environment would be to put an end to all illicit mining operations.

The protest walk underscores the critical need for more immediate action to safeguard the nation’s water bodies, forests, and ecosystems and shows rising popular unhappiness with the government’s attempts to combat illicit mining.
