The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been accused by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) with planning to cause unrest in the Ashanti Region in advance of the 2024 elections.
According to the NPP, the NDC, under the leadership of retired COP Kofi Boakye, is using this as part of a larger plan to scare people and deter them from supporting the party on election day.
NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye issued a warning during a press conference in Accra, saying that any attempts to disturb the tranquility in the party’s strongholds would encounter strong opposition and eventually fail.
“Information available to the NPP reveals that several months ago, the NDC has been training thugs in pockets of communities, including Obuasi East Constituency under the guise of private security training. These individuals are being prepared to disrupt the electoral process, particularly in the Ashanti Region which is the NPP stronghold.
“We are aware that recently on November 11, 2024, the NDC committee on mining led by one Toney Aubynn, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, held a secret meeting with some NDC small-scale miners at the Conference Hall of Mawuli Hotel in the Obuasi West Municipality.
“One of the aims of the meeting was to recruit some members of the pro-NDC small-scale miners to form part of the NDC’s Eagle Force Vigilante Group which will be deployed to some NPP polling stations to cause mayhem on election day,” he stayed.
Additionally, the New Patriotic Party has refuted claims that it is working with Brig. Gen. Michael Opoku, the general officer in charge of the Ghana Armed Forces’ Central Command, to rig the Ashanti Region elections, saying that the accusations made by the NDC and Communication are unfounded. It lacks any sort of solid proof and is just another last-ditch effort by the NDC to inflame tensions and divert attention away from their own wrongdoings.
“You want us to take you seriously, but you [say] this against a respectable army officer, with unfounded accusations, and you don’t provide any evidence,” Nana Boakye said.
