For the New Patriotic Party’s primary to choose a parliamentary candidate for the Assin North by-election, two people have chosen to run.
They are Charles Opoku and Frederick Amoah Kyei.
Evans Nimako, the party’s director of elections, told media that the party has taken steps to expedite the procedure because the election is less than a month away.
As a result, he stated, vetting will take place on Friday, June 2, and the primary to choose a candidate will take place on Wednesday, June 7.
“The National Vice Chairperson, Mr. Danquah Smith, will sit with the committee to conduct a vetting. We need to select a candidate and this is going to be done by the party in Assin North constituency. I’m referring to the managers of the voting centers, the election coordinators, the patrons of the constituencies, the council of elders, and the constituents themselves. They are not being forced to vote for candidates by the party, he claimed.
According to Mr. Nimako, the NPP is certain that they would win the by-election.
Assin North now needs a by-election after the Electoral Commission received a letter from parliament declaring the seat vacant.
This came after the Supreme Court ruled that the Electoral Commission had broken the law by permitting Mr. Quayson to run in the 2020 parliamentary election without providing proof that he had renounced his citizenship in Canada.
