The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has chosen Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its presidential candidate, and he will lead the party to the general election of 2024.

In the nationwide presidential primary that took place on Saturday, November 4, 2023, he received 118,210 votes, with over 210,000 delegates casting ballots.

Ken Agyapong, the Assin Central Member of Parliament, was his closest opponent with 71, 996 votes.

The other candidates, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former minister of food and agriculture, and Francis Addai Nimoh, a former member of parliament for Mampong, received 1,459 and 781 votes, respectively.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will face former President John Dramani Mahama after his election. Mahama received the support of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) earlier this year.

The party wants to break the record that no political party in Ghana has won more than two terms in a row under the Fourth Republic, which began in 1992 and continues to this day.

The major opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and the ruling New Patriotic Party are expected to engage in fierce competition in the 2024 election.
