Boakye Agyarko and Francis Addai-Nimoh will face off against each other in a run-off election on September 2, 2023, to determine which candidate will be added to the list of five flagbearer candidates. Only NPP National Council members will be voting in the election.
The decision was made following a National Council meeting of the party on Wednesday, August 30, 2023, according to the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Given that both candidates for flagbearer received 9 votes each in the voting on August 26, there was some debate as to whether the party should permit all 961 of the super delegates to vote in the run-off.
The National Council discussed the issue on Wednesday and came to the decision that the run-off should take place at the National Headquarters, but that only their 161 members would be able to determine which of the two flagbearer candidates would win.
At a press conference, Party General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong stated that the choice was made to save money and time.
The National Council overturned the Elections Committee’s ruling prohibiting government appointees, party officers, and MPs from serving as polling agents for presidential candidates, as well, according to General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua.
He said that starting today, these people could serve as polling agents in the forthcoming November 4 presidential primary.
