CEO of Ghana Free Zones Authority, Mike Oquaye Jr. defeated Sarah Adwoa Safo, the MP for Dome-Kwabenya, in the primary elections for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The son of the former Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Oquaye, presented a serious challenge to Adwoa Safo, who has been representing the Dome-Kwabenya constituency since 2012.
Mike Oquaye Jr., the NPP’s parliamentary candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, secured a substantial 1,194 votes in the primary on Saturday, January 27, ultimately defeating Adwoa Safo.
Adwoa Safo, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics and a key member of the ruling NPP, is a lawyer and a former Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament. She received 328 votes.
Nonetheless, the primary’s result indicates a change in the constituency’s political dynamics.
The election of Mike Oquaye Jr. has sparked conversations in political circles, and observers have pointed out how significant this development is. Adwoa Safo defeated him by eight votes in the most recent parliamentary election.
It emphasizes how democratic party primaries are and how members of the party can voice their choices for candidates.
