The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), according to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has a “despicable reputation of throwing allegations around without substantive evidence.”
The party said it was regrettable that the NDC claimed to have found some inconsistencies in the 2024 provisional voter register and questioned why, in spite of the Commission’s repeated requests, the NDC had not given the Electoral Commission (EC) comprehensive proof of the purported anomalies.
During a press briefing on Thursday, September 19, the NPP General Secretary Lawyer Justin Frimpong Kodua (JFK) said that if the EC had done nothing after the NDC provided proof of the purported anomalies and disparities, then the NDC’s nationwide protest against the Commission would have been appropriate.
They said, however, that it is evident that the NDC has nothing since they haven’t given the EC any proof of the purported anomalies.
“For instance, on page 2 of their petition to the EC, the NDC stated emphatically that they have uncovered evidence of Two Hundred and Forty-Three Thousand, Five Hundred and Forty (243,540) illegal transfers, Three Thousand, Nine Hundred and Fifty-Seven (3,957) deleted names of voters, as well as over Fifteen Thousand unidentified voter transfer paths in the provisional register.
“Yet, thirteen days after the NDC first met the EC on September 6, 2024, they have still not provided a single document to authenticate any of these allegations. We ask, is this not interesting? Indeed, if the NDC has any evidence of illegal transfers, why have they not submitted evidence for such illegality to be reversed by the EC,” the party questioned.
Using examples from the 2020 general elections, where the NDC declared former President Mahama a winner only to subsequently accuse EC of cheating when the official results were revealed, the NPP further slammed the NDC for having made such assertions in the past.
“Friends from the media, ladies and gentlemen, it is obvious that we have allowed the NDC to get away with so many lies and deceptions. Lies that nearly tarnished our enviable democratic credentials in 2020 and in some instances, threatened the peace and security of our dear republic.
According to the party, the NDC’s latest rants against the provisional voter’s register are “undoubtedly just another grand old NDC strategy of lies and deception to court public sympathy and support in an election year.”
The party asked the NDC to provide its proof of anomalies to the EC and the public, warning them against believing the party’s “crafted false narrative” that they are being treated unfairly by a state-run electoral body.
