In response to what it calls “selective justice” and increasing persecution of its members, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned both President John Mahama and Christian Tetteh Yohuno, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
Hundreds of supporters flocked to Accra’s streets on Tuesday, September 23, for the party’s “Y3n Suro Ahunahuna” demonstration, where the petition was presented.
Starting at the Obra Spot at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, the demonstration moved along the capital’s main thoroughfares until arriving at the Ghana Police Service headquarters.
NPP leaders claim that the protest is in response to a pattern of politically motivated arrests and investigations that they claim were carried out against party members during the current administration.
As protesters held placards and chanted songs calling for justice and fairness for NPP supporters, security forces were strongly stationed along the demonstration route to maintain peace and order.
The NPP has urged civil society and international allies to pay attention to the developments and has pledged to keep fighting back against what it refers to as “state-sponsored intimidation.”
However, Salam Mustapha, the party’s National Youth Organiser, has cautioned that if the current police leadership keeps up the pattern, it could jeopardise the integrity of the police.
