In protest of the West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) decision to withhold and cancel the results for certain students who took the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has announced plans to hold a demonstration on Tuesday, February 25, 2025.

With a focus on their demand for justice and transparency in WAEC’s evaluation and outcome management procedures, NUGS has formally informed the Greater Accra Regional Police Command of the planned demonstration.

WAEC’s actions were characterized as unjust and an abuse of discretionary power by NUGS in a statement released on Tuesday, February 18.

“This demonstration is a protest against what we see as an injustice and an abuse of discretionary power by WAEC. NUGS demands urgent intervention to rectify this situation and ensure that affected students are given a fair opportunity to continue their education.

“We call on all affected students, parents, concerned stakeholders, and all students to join us in this fight for justice,” the statement read.

WAEC’s handling of the results was sharply criticized by NUGS, which claimed that thousands of students had been “unfairly” affected by the cancellations and delays.

“The delay has made them ineligible for admission into public tertiary institutions, even for those whose results have been released, as all admission processes have now concluded,” the union continued.

The purpose of the demonstration is to put pressure on WAEC and the appropriate authorities to act quickly to allay the worries of the impacted students and stop future incidents of this kind.
