In protest of the huge spike in the license verification fee that is placed on nurses and midwives, the National Council of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has announced that an industrial strike will be scheduled to take place.
The license verification price for nurses and midwives has increased by 445.5%, and as a result, they now have to spend GH̼3,000.00 for licensing verification. This charge has caused discontent within the Association.
A statement issued by GRNMA President Mrs. Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo delineated a range of measures that members were to undertake, one of which was to don red bands as a mark of protest from March 22nd to March 27th, 2024.
In addition, a press conference to brief the media on the subject and other connected matters is planned for March 27, 2024.
Then, from March 28 to April 2, 2024, there will be a nationwide indefinite strike action that involves the termination of outpatient department services. Beginning on April 3rd, 2024, services from in-patient departments will likewise be discontinued if an agreement isn’t reached.
Mrs. Ofori-Ampofo brought attention to the Association’s dissatisfaction with the lack of response from pertinent organizations, such as the Ghanaian Parliament, the Ministry of Health, and the Nursing and Midwifery Council, in spite of prior correspondence expressing displeasure and calling for a fee review.
In addition to stressing that a 25% increase in the license verification cost would be reasonable and doable for members facing financial difficulties, she urged nurses and midwives to remain resolute and reject any intimidation or threats.
