At the Ashanti Region’s Obuasi Government Hospital, dozens of distraught relatives gathered to sadly say goodbye to their loved ones who had been slain in a bloody conflict with the military.
Following the conflict at an abandoned Anglogold Ashanti concession, seven members of the community who were thought to be illegal miners were freed to be buried in an Islamic cemetery.
The Obuasi Chief Imam led prayers during a mass burial that took place on the hospital’s premises.
Military guards reportedly engaged the miners after they broke through a security fence at one of AngloGold Ashanti’s shuttered concessions. The families of the deceased are in mourning following the horrific event.
Two of the non-Muslim victims are still in the mortuary.
As part of the ongoing investigations, medical personnel are anticipated to perform autopsies on the two dead and provide the police with an official report that will be sent to the president.
The community’s intense rage and disgust over the circumstances that led to the murders was evident in the crowds that kept assembling close to the graveyard. Residents have demanded responsibility and steps to avoid future deaths, as well as a comprehensive and unbiased investigation.
After the miners were buried, security in the gold mining industry has grown in response to mounting tensions.
