During today’s #OccupyBoG demonstration, the Minority Caucus in Parliament rejected to deliver their petition to the Director of Security at the Bank of Ghana (BoG). The leaders of the protest rejected, noting the absence of Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, and any of his deputies.
Wing Commander Kwame Asare Boateng, the head of security at the central bank, tried to accept the Minority’s appeal on Dr. Addison’s behalf. Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the minority leader, disagreed and called the bank’s action “disrespectful.”
The bank’s leadership, including Wing Commander Kwame Asare Boateng, welcomed the protest leaders when they arrived. They were informed that Governor Addison was unable to accept the petition since he was attending a meeting with a delegation from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The Minority Leader responded by expressing his displeasure and calling this development rude. He promised to come back once the governor could accept the petition in person.
“Not allowing him to receive the petition is extremely insulting. We never stated that we would deliver our petition to security, and we would not give you the petition, Mr. Forson responded. Not even the deputy was present.
“Now that he has decided to disrespect us, we will not present our petition, and so we will go and come back again. Until we see him, this is just the beginning,” he added.
The Bank of Ghana’s Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, and his deputies have been urged for resignation by The Minority due to alleged mismanagement of the institution.
Their appeal came after the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) Annual Report and Financial Statement revealed that the BoG had incurred a loss of GH60.8 billion, or $6 billion, and a negative equity of more than GH55.1 billion.
The #OccupyBoGProtest aims to address a variety of concerns regarding the Central Bank and the problems facing the country’s economy.
The BoG Governor is being accused by minority party lawmakers of mismanaging the state’s finances and should resign from his position as head of the central bank as a result.
