The government has been formally petitioned by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, to immediately stop the sale of four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, a business owned by Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture.

In his appeal, Mr. Ablakwa urged President Akufo-Addo to halt the sale process, stressing that selling state assets has never been in Ghana’s best interests and shouldn’t happen without the people’s collective approval.

“We hereby make the following demands: We call on President Akufo-Addo to immediately stop the sale of our SSNIT hotels. We take the view that state assets should not be sold, especially profitable ones. Historically, since 1966, the sale of state assets has not been in the supreme interest of Ghana, and we, therefore, cannot continue on this destructive trajectory,” Ablakwa stated.

He continued by stating that the sale of public properties by the government without the approval of all Ghanaians is a wicked, immoral, and unethical practice, particularly when ministers and other government officials are involved in the acquisition of these assets.

He said, “especially after he promised this nation that his appointees who wish to profit from these kinds of deals would be better off staying in the private sector.”

The government’s representative, a presidential official, accepted the plea.

Alongside the MP, hundreds of Ghanaians participated in today’s demonstration, which was heavily policed.
