In response to claims of wrongdoing by parliamentary candidates in the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary election, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has opened a thorough investigation.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Dumelo and the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP Lydia Alhassan are the two candidates running for the seat.

They are being investigated for a number of alleged violations that occurred during the special voting exercise on Monday, December 2, which took place before the main election on Saturday.

It is unclear if the two candidates’ visit to the OSP constituted an official arrest, according to a report by media.

According to him, the OSP is “closely monitoring her [Lydia Forson] activities” and is scheduled to meet “substantial evidence before proceeding with formal arrest and charges.”

John Dumelo’s interactions with voters in the line on Monday have also been the subject of an investigation by the OSP. Election laws were broken by Dumelo’s activities, the office clarified.

With just three days left before the election, the OSP has made it clear that it would not expedite the inquiry. The office thinks it’s critical to take the right steps one at a time, and the results will be revealed following Saturday’s primary election.

The office clarified that rendering a decision before to the main election is likely to have an impact on both candidates, both positively and negatively.

The incumbent MP was seen on video giving out what appeared to be food items along with water and beverages to voters in line during Monday’s special polling exercise in the constituency. She denied the behavior, though, and maintained that she wasn’t present at the voting place when the alleged incident occurred.

The MP acknowledged the behavior after media published videos of her that went viral, but she maintained that she had no intention of influencing voters.

She clarified that she had prepared the meal for the constituency officers of her party, but as she was delivering it to them, other voters in the line requested it, so she shared it with them.

John Dumelo reportedly filed an official petition with the OSP to look into her opponent’s possible violations of electoral regulations.
