The High Court has received an application from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) dated September 11 asking for confirmation of the orders freezing and seizing the financial assets of Cecilia Dapaah, a former minister of sanitation and water resources.
The date of the hearing in this case is October 18, 2023.
On August 9, the OSP had previously frozen the former minister’s cedi and dollar bank accounts.
The High Court in Accra reversed this ruling on August 31 and mandated that Ms. Cecilia Dapaah receive her seized funds back within seven days.
The OSP was also ordered by the court to unfreeze her accounts.
Following the High Court’s order to return the confiscated funds, the OSP then used its legal authority to regain possession of the money.
In July 2023, the Chronicle Newspaper revealed that former sanitation minister Cecilia Dapaah’s domestic staff was being sued for allegedly stealing significant sums of money, including $1 million, $300,000 euros, and millions of Ghanaian cedis, as well as their own personal items, which were worth thousands of Ghanaian cedis and dollars.
As a result of the uproar, Cecilia Dapaah quit her job as a minister. She was then detained by the OSP before being released on bail.
The former Sanitation Minister’s home was searched by agents from the Office of the Special Prosecutor on July 24, 2023, a Monday. They searched her apartment and found US$590,000 and GHC2.7 million in cash.
These significant sums of cash were swiftly seized by the OSP as important evidence to support their ongoing investigation.
In addition, the OSP frozen seven of Cecilia Dapaah’s bank accounts.
