Investigations into the suspected misappropriation of GH¢1.3 billion from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) have been formally launched by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng said during a press conference on Wednesday, February 12, that his office is investigating allegations of corruption and offenses related to corruption involving money that was embezzled from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF), a system intended to stabilize petroleum prices nationwide.
According to Kissi Agyebeng, the probe mainly focuses on four people: Wendy Ashong Newman, Freda Tandoh, Jacob Amoah, the Coordinator of the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF), and Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, the former CEO of the NPA.
“The OSP has commenced investigations into suspected corruption and corruption-related offenses in respect of an alleged embezzlement of GH¢1.3 billion from the Unified Petroleum Pricing Fund (UPPF) at the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).
“The investigation primarily targets the following persons: the coordinator of the UPPF, Jacob Amoah, NPA’s staff Wendy Ashong Newman, NPA’s staff Freda Tandoh, and a former Chief Executive of the NPA, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.”
After being hired by the NPA in 2021, Mustapha Abdul Hamid held the position until the beginning of 2024.
During his term, the NPA was in charge of overseeing the UPPF, maintaining fuel quality standards, and controlling the price of petroleum products.
