The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially delivered the Bawku Peace Mediation Report to President John Dramani Mahama, as a component of revitalized initiatives to achieve enduring peace in the area affected by conflict.

The presentation occurred on Tuesday, December 16, at the Jubilee House, during a ceremony that included traditional leaders, important stakeholders, and senior government officials.

The proceedings commenced with the arrival of traditional chiefs and invited stakeholders, then the Chief of Staff, the Asantehene, and lastly the President.

The event began with the national anthem followed by an opening prayer, and then the Director of State Protocol provided introductory comments. The Minister of the Interior then delivered a welcome speech.

The ceremony’s peak occurred when Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who facilitated the high-level mediation, made his speech and symbolically presented the detailed peace report to President Mahama.

In his speech, the Asantehene emphasized that the results of the mediation process should be obligatory for all parties engaged, highlighting the necessity for joint dedication to the recommendations presented in the report.

While presenting the document, Otumfuo emphasized that the process he conducted was purely a mediation effort and not an arbitration, noting that the report was not meant to assign blame.

“I’m here to present the facts as they are for us to have peace. I’m not here to give a judgment as to who was right or wrong. The report should bind on all of us. I have explained to the various parties. It was mediation, not arbitration,” Otumfuo said.

He conveyed gratitude to President Mahama for the trust placed in him to promote dialogue and assist in resolving the enduring conflict.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who was previously selected by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to lead mediation efforts to end the decades-long chieftaincy conflict in Bawku, which has hampered the municipality’s social and economic life.

In order to foster confidence and start a discussion, the Asantehene had separate sessions with members of the rival factions in April 2025, marking the official start of the mediation process.

Despite being put on hold for a while, the negotiations restarted in May 2025 and have since helped to bring about a period of relative quiet in the unstable region.

A significant turning point in the peace process has been reached with the publication of the mediation report, as stakeholders and the government take into account the suggestions for reaching a long-term settlement to the Bawku dispute.
