The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana’s two major political parties, have been charged by the Electoral Commission (EC) for interfering with the compilation of the results of the parliamentary elections in twelve constituencies.
EC Chairperson Jean Mensa stated during a press conference on Thursday, December 19, 2024, that the activities of party leaders and supporters harmed attempts to guarantee a transparent re-collation process.
Dome Kwabenya, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, Suhum, Akwatia, Fanteakwa North, Ahafo Ano North, and Tema Central are among the impacted constituencies. In an effort to avoid such interruptions, the EC had already moved the recollation procedure to the Tesano Police Training Center.
The procedure started off without any problems, but according to Mrs. Mensa, it was thrown off track once more.
“Our collation centres were once again disrupted and taken over by political party leaders and supporters, and results were declared for those constituencies without due process being followed,” she said.
She gave concrete instances, pointing to Okaikwei Central, where the results of 31 polling stations were disregarded while determining the winner. Similar exclusions were made for 62 polling stations in Ablekuma North.
The commission deems it unlawful that these declarations were produced under duress. “The commission will not uphold those declarations, as well as others in the affected constituencies,” she stated.
