Parliament has officially approved the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, 2025, representing a significant achievement in executing a key initiative of the John Mahama administration.

The approval came after extensive discussions and interactions among members from both sides of the House, as Majority and Minority caucuses vigorously debated the advantages and disadvantages of the suggested legislation.

Initially presented to Parliament in late 2025, the bill aims to transform Ghana’s economy to function continuously, 24 hours a day. A dedicated 24-Hour Economy Authority is created to serve as the primary entity in charge of coordinating the nationwide implementation of the policy.

The authority will administer the coordination of actions between state agencies and private sector entities, drawing in investments and guaranteeing the presence of regulatory structures and infrastructure essential for maintaining continuous economic activity outside of regular working hours.

The 24-hour economy initiative was a key component of the NDC’s campaign message for the 2024 general elections and is being advocated by the government as a means to increase job opportunities, boost productivity, and foster overall economic growth.

During discussions, Minority MPs voiced concerns regarding the proposal, warning that inadequate implementation could result in security threats and possible interruptions to everyday activities.

In reply, the Majority caucus argued that the expected benefits warrant the policy, assuring the House that adequate security measures and regulatory protections will be in place during its execution.

With the bill now passed, steps are expected to begin toward the establishment of the authority and the operationalisation of the 24-hour economy framework.
