A budget of GH₵65,899,456 has been approved by the Ghanaian Parliament for the Ministry of Sports and Recreation for the fiscal year that ends on December 31, 2025.
Members of Parliament voiced worries about the absence of specialized financing for maintaining the nation’s sports infrastructure during the lengthy discussions that led to the approval.
Kofi Adams, the minister of sports and recreation, acknowledged the concerns expressed during the parliamentary session and gave the house his word that the Ministry would deal with the matter.
He disclosed that following Ghana’s 2026 FIFA WorldCup qualifying match against Chad, the Accra Sports Stadium is scheduled to undergo a significant refurbishment.
Sports community stakeholders have long demanded upgrades to important facilities nationwide, thus the announcement has elicited a range of responses.
Although the approved budget helps the Ministry with its operational and developmental demands, MPs pointed out that maintaining the current sports infrastructure must still be given first priority.
Minister Kofi Adams stressed that the Accra Sports Stadium redevelopment is the first step in a larger initiative to modernize sports facilities around the country, which is crucial for boosting regional and global athletic events in Ghana.
Parliament’s support for the nation’s sports and recreation industry is reflected in the budget’s approval; nevertheless, Members of Parliament have encouraged the Ministry to take aggressive measures to preserve and modernize infrastructure to meet international standards.
