As members of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) go on strike nationwide patients in Ghana—especially in the Volta Regional capital of Ho—are experiencing significant delays and disruptions in the delivery of healthcare.

A revised Collective Agreement consented with the Ministry of Health in May 2024 is the reason for the industrial action, which went into full effect today.

The National Labour Commission ruled that the strike was unlawful, but it has still occurred, with nurses and midwives across refusing to work.

A tour of important government medical facilities in Ho demonstrated the extent of the damage.

Nurses were absent from the Dialysis Unit, Outpatient Department (OPD), and multiple wards.

Some patients were compelled to leave because of the lack of care, while others sat unattended.

Speaking to Ghanatodayonline.com, a number of disgruntled patients and their families urged the government to act swiftly to end the standoff, highlighting the toll the strike is having on those who are most in need.

The GRNMA District Chairman in Ho, Mr. Mathias Avinu, justified the Association’s actions and verified the complete service pullout.

He claimed that after numerous delays and broken promises about the agreed terms, the strike is the last option.

He warned that additional procrastination could severely impair healthcare services across the country and urged the government to respond to the nurses’ requests in good faith.
