Police Officers jubilate over Dr. George Akuffo Dampare dismissal

The appointment of Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) has been celebrated by certain police officers, who have expressed their delight at the change in leadership.

Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was replaced by IGP Yohuno, who was sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, March 14, at the Jubilee House.

Officers were observed celebrating, applauding his leadership, and enthusiastically welcome him when he visited Police Headquarters following his swearing-in.

Employee enthusiasm shows hope for his leadership and the Ghana Police Service’s future under his direction.

To show their enthusiasm and approbation of the new IGP’s appointment, some officers publicly showered him with money in a theatrical display of joy.

Some police officers publicly denounced former IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare during the celebrations, calling him a “dictator” and a “tyrant.” They claim that his dismissal has “freed” the police force from his control.

Their response indicates a change in expectations under the new leadership, as officers expect IGP Yohuno to take a different tack in terms of administration and police.

IGP Yohuno’s appointment comes after a reorganization attempt to improve public safety and law enforcement nationwide. Dr. George Akuffo Dampare is replaced by the new IGP.
