In the run-up to the 2024 election, Yaw Boateng Gyan, a former National Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has warned members of the party about the perils of complacency.
On December 12, 2023, he addressed members of the NDC who might believe that the party is well-positioned to win back power in the next elections in an interview with Okay FM.
He emphasized that such complacency had contributed to the party’s decline into opposition in prior elections by drawing on past experiences.
He emphasized that winning elections is not something that should be taken for granted and calls for proactive efforts.
“Let me say power is not taken on a silver platter, nobody should make their mind that we’ve already won the elections. We don’t win elections just like that; if so, then we shouldn’t even campaign. Shouldn’t we base [our expectations] on hardship in the country?” he said.
In order to guarantee a strong presence in the election process, he called on party members to commit themselves fully to hard campaigns and to giving party agents’ training top priority.
“We need to put in a lot of effort, train the agents for our party, and win the elections. Therefore, no one should believe that our victory was that simple.
“We did the same, having that complacency, and now we are in opposition, so everybody should come and help so that we can win power,” Gyan asserted.
Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu, a Ghanaian economist living in the United States, has also counseled the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to celebrate vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s victory in the recently concluded New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary.
Considering the outcry that accompanied Dr. Bawumia’s election process, Dr. Sa-ad claims that while the vice’s performance may not be encouraging, the NDC should not be complacent about it.
“The Bawumia signal is not weak. NDC must eschew complacency and let the hard work begin. There is serious battle ahead for election 2024”, the American based economist wrote.
It is not clear what prompted Dr. Sa-ad to write this, but comments by some supporters of the NDC across social media platforms indicate that the NDC considers the performance of Bawumia in the primaries as abysmal.
