The reviewed pay and allowances for its members were approved by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, which has been acknowledged by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG).
Since May 24, 2023, the Association has been protesting and on indefinite strike in protest of the government’s failure to implement the agreed-upon terms.
JUSAG had previously requested that the government implement the authorized cost of living stipend for its members, but these requests were not swiftly taken into consideration. The Association then requested help from Chief Justice Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkonoo.
The Association has confirmed that the Chief Justice has actually authorized the evaluated salary and allowances due to JUSAG members after working with him. The Association has reported successful results from this engagement.
In a statement, JUSAG expressed gratitude for the Chief Justice’s creativity, great leadership, and the help of other stakeholders while acknowledging the difficult nature of the process and engagement with her.
“Though the process had been challenging, we are glad that her ingenuity and exceptional leadership with the support of other stakeholders led to conclusion of the engagement on the 15th of June 2023 with an understanding that implementation of the reviewed salaries wil take effect in July 2023.
The statement claims that the engagement came to an end on June 15, 2023, with the understanding that the revised remuneration would be implemented starting in July 2023.
The Chief Justice’s letter, dated July 13, 2023, verified the President’s acceptance of the new pay scale, according to JUSAG.
The Ministry of Finance had stated at the end of the engagement that implementation would start in July 2023, and the group reiterated this.
“We are further gratified by the commitment of the Honourable Chief Justice t o see to the passage into law a Judicial Service Regulation (Constitutional Instrument) ni accordance with Article 158(2), 159, and the case of JUSAG vs The Attorney General &2 Ors (2016). We hope that comprehensive work on the CI will bring an end to the biennial strikes associated with salary reviews,” JUSAG noted.
