President Akufo-Addo has sent a petition asking Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to dismiss Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.
Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has filed a petition requesting that President Akufo-Addo remove Mr. Agyebeng from his role.
In the petition, dated April 30, 2024, Mr. Agyebeng is accused of misbehaving with regard to judges and the administration of justice, and procurement violations are alleged in relation to the Office of the Special Prosecutor’s (OSP) vehicle purchases.
In his petition, Mr. Amidu alleges that the OSP has improperly appointed individuals, violated his right to information, and violated his citizens’ rights through arrests and detentions.
The impeachment procedure seems to be connected to Mr. Agyebeng’s contentious news conference, when he asserted that judges were plotting against him.
According to Mr. Amidu, these comments denigrate the judiciary and amount to abuse of judges.
This comes after rumors that Mr. Agyebeng chose to conduct a news conference to voice his dissatisfaction with his position rather than comply with requests to quit.
Furthermore, Mr. Amidu claims that by making arrests, the Special Prosecutor violated the rights of people like Prof. Frimpong Boateng and Cecilia Dapaah.
