At the request of the president of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo departed the country on October 11, 2023, in order to give a keynote speech at the USIP headquarters in Washington, D.C., on October 12, 2023.
The United States and its allies are looking for ways to best support Ghana, one of the United States’ most steadfast democratic partners in West Africa, and other established democracies in the region, to promote and sustain democracy as a model of governance as West Africa and the Sahel face a wave of extraconstitutional movements and growing political instability.
While in Washington, D.C., President Akufo-Addo is scheduled to meet with other US officials. During the conversation, they will address Ghana’s crucial position as a regional leader in supporting peace, stability, and sustainable development.
Along with representatives from the Presidency and the Foreign Ministry, he was accompanied by the Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
On Sunday, October 15, 2023, President Akufo-Addo will return to Ghana. In his absence, Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will serve in his place in accordance with Article 60(8) of the Constitution.
