On Wednesday, January 3, three justices of the Supreme Court were sworn in by President Akufo-Addo.

Henry Anthony Kwofie, Yaw Darko Asare, and Richard Adjei-Frimpong are the recently sworn-in Justices.

In his congrats, President Akufo-Addo tasked the newly appointed Justices with preserving the nation’s 1992 constitution.

“They have each met the stringent requirements for appointment, set forth in article 128 clause 4 of the Constitution, and are deemed to have the independence of spirit, high moral character, proven integrity and impartiality of mind to hold this high office.

The appointments fill vacancies on the Supreme Court resulting from the mandatory retirements of Justice Nene Ofoe Amegatcher on February 3, 2023, Chief Justice Anin Yeboah on May 24, 2023, and Justice Jones Dotse on June 8, 2024.

He tasked the three Justices with accomplishing everything within their purview and authority to help Ghanaians develop a judiciary that they will respect.

Making wise and well-informed decisions is the best way for the judiciary to gain the respect of the public, according to him.

“To our new Supreme Court judges, Justice Henry Anthony Cofie, Justice Yaw Asare Darko, and Justice Richard Agyei Frimpong, it is extremely important for you to bear in mind that the growth of our nation demands that we have a judiciary that commands the respect of the people by the quality of the delivery of justice as well as the comportment of its judges.”

In response to the President’s charge, Justice Richard Agyei Frimpong and Justice Henry Anthony Cofie spoke on behalf of Justice Yaw Asare Darko and expressed gratitude for the honor the Ghanaian people and government had bestowed upon them by appearing before the nation’s highest court.

We consider addressing the obstacles in the way of advancing the rule of law and the democratic culture we have established for ourselves as a people is our first responsibility.

Justice Henry Anthony Cofie stated, “The oaths we have subscribed to today will keep serving as our guidepost through all the changing scenes of our lives in the apex court”
