President Mahama gives Chief Justice Torkornoo 10 days to respond to removal petitions

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has been formally instructed by President John Mahama to provide a preliminary response to three petitions demanding her removal from office within ten days.

Three people filed the petitions on February 14 and March 17, 2025, alleging wrongdoing and abuse of power.

The Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, signed a letter outlining the directive.

As required by Article 146(6) of the Constitution, the President first sent the petitions to Doe Adjaho, Chairman of the Council of State, for deliberation. This was the first step in the constitutional process. On March 27, 2025, the Council of State granted its approval, and the petitions were then forwarded to the Chief Justice for her feedback.

President Mahama was concerned, nevertheless, about a letter from Chief Justice Torkonoo that was leaked on March 27, 2025, and went viral on social media before he had a chance to read it.

The President underlined that when dealing with such delicate issues, professionalism and due process are essential.

The President will decide on the next course of action in the case after the Chief Justice has had ten days to answer.
