The Minister-designate for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, appeared before the Appointment Committee of Parliament on January 20, 2025, and answered important concerns about the direction of Ghana’s educational system.
He explained the government’s intention for free tertiary tuition and President Mahama’s position on the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program.
Rejecting reports that Free SHS might be discontinued, Iddrisu emphasized President Mahama’s dedication to evaluating and enhancing the program.
In order to assist more Ghanaian students, he underlined the need to make the policy more sustainable and broaden its scope.
”Let me assure this committee that President John Dramani Mahama, has no option to cancel Free SHS. Therefore, those who listen to him, even in the cause of his campaign, he has stated that he will expand Free SHS.
“It was to tell Ghanaians that as President of the Republic, he wants to give 2 million to Article 25 of the 1992 Constitution and Article 38, which spells out the objective of our educational policy.
“Chair, the important thing is that he will subject the Free SHS to a review.”
Haruna Iddrisu claims that in order to accomplish this, the government intends to host a stakeholder forum in order to collect a range of viewpoints and suggestions for how to improve the education sector.
Mr. Iddrisu further disclosed that the government’s ambitious free tuition policy for first-year tertiary students will be implemented with an estimated ₵345 million.
