As part of his ongoing tour of West African nations, President John Mahama pursued Ghana’s long-standing good neighbor policy.
He visited Niamey, Niger, on Sunday to meet with General Abdourahamane Tchiani, who is the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland’s president.
Following negotiations behind closed doors, the two presidents met in the presidential palace with their delegations in a larger bilateral meeting.
Following the interactions, a statement indicated that the topics of discussion included improving and unhindered trade between the two nations, bolstering bilateral connections, and enhancing security cooperation in the Sahel and West African region to combat terrorism.
President Mahama emphasized the need for increased cooperation in the fight against terrorism, which not only threatens the Sahel region but also nations farther down towards the coast. President Tchiani also brought up the necessity for cooperation and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to recognize the Alliance of Sahel States.
Since Ghana imports a lot of agricultural products from Niger, the two countries have been working together on trade for many years, Mr. Mahama took the opportunity to thank his Nigerien counterpart for sending a delegation to his inauguration on January 7, 2025.
