In a statement issued and signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, and copied to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dated January 14, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to recall all Diplomatic and Service passports by January 24, 2025, for re-issuance to those who are legally eligible.

The government explained that the exercise is in line with its commitment to ensuring the proper use and administration of official travel documents in accordance with national and international standards, and that the recall is intended to prevent misuse, protect the nation’s reputation, and preserve the integrity of our diplomatic engagements.

Additionally, the presidency ordered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to publish a notice informing the public that all holders of service and diplomatic passports issued by the previous administration should return them to the ministry for verification and, if necessary, reissue.

Furthermore, by no later than January 24, 2025, the ministry is supposed to provide a compliance timetable that outlines a fair timeframe for all parties involved to adhere to the recall.

Lastly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to carry out a verification procedure that entails a careful examination of every passport that is returned to make sure it satisfies the most recent eligibility requirements for issuance.
