President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to reviving the Central Region’s Komenda Sugar Factory in order to make the area Ghana’s main producer of sugar.
At a “Thank You” gathering in Cape Coast, President Mahama gave his word that the project will move forward for the Central Region’s benefit. “We are determined to proceed and continue with that project so that the Central Region will become the biggest producer of sugar in Ghana” Mr. Mahama declared.
The factory has experienced difficulties over the years, such as shortages of raw materials. To renovate the factory, the previous administration obtained a $35 million loan from the Indian Export-Import Bank and an extra $24 million investment. Test runs and other efforts have been made, but full operations have been impeded.
President Mahama has instructed the Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry to provide an update on the factory’s status in order to support the appropriate actions in response to these problems.
He also reaffirmed his government’s resolve to help farmers in the area by implementing updated agriculture laws and better irrigation.
