The government’s new 24-Hour Plus Economy program would be implemented primarily by the private sector, according to President John Dramani Mahama. He stated that the government will merely have a supportive role during the initiative’s official launch on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, in Accra.

Speaking at the event, President Mahama clarified that working longer hours is not the only aspect of the 24-Hour Plus Economy. Instead, it’s a carefully thought-out plan to increase exports, productivity, and job creation. The government will assist this change through funding mechanisms, rules, and essential infrastructure, but the private sector will be the driving force behind it, he said.

“The private sector will lead the 24-hour plus programme, government .” President Mahama said.

The 24-Hour Plus Economy includes several sub-programs, each targeting specific areas of the economy.

These include: Grow 24 – focuses on agriculture, agro-processing, and food security, Make 24 – supports manufacturing and industrial growth, Build 24 – boosts infrastructure and public works, Show 24 – promotes tourism, culture, and the creative industry, Connect 24 – enhances logistics, transport, and digital systems, Fund 24 – improves access to finance for businesses, Aspire 24 – develops skills, values, and digital abilities, Goal 24 – unites all sectors for national productivity and pride.

The initiative’s centerpiece, the Volta Economic Corridor, was also unveiled by President Mahama. The Volta Lake region’s economic and environmental potential will be fully used by this initiative. It will feature agro-industrial parks, tourism development, extensive irrigation for more than two million hectares of farmland, and the lake’s usage as a major transportation corridor.

“We are bringing back Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s original vision for the Volta project – not just for electricity, but for agriculture, transportation, and industrialization,” he added.

The initiative will collaborate with commercial banks, development finance organizations, and blended finance models to guarantee adequate funding. The program will soon be run by a new, independent 24-Hour Plus Authority that will answer directly to the president.

Ghanaians were reassured by President Mahama that the 24-Hour Plus Economy would be planned, targeted, and built to provide tangible economic benefits, particularly in industries with high employment and a concentration on exports.
