Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has sworn in Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as the Republic of Ghana’s vice president.

She took the Vice President’s Oath and the Oath of Allegiance at a historic ceremony in the center of Accra, the country’s capital.

She breaks the barrier to gender equality by becoming Ghana’s first female vice president.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was the first member of a major Ghanaian political party to be nominated as President John Dramani’s vice presidential candidate in 2020.

In 2024, he made the same decision, and Ghana became the first country to elect a female vice president.

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang led the University of Cape Coast (UCC) from 2008 to 2012 and was the first female vice chancellor in Ghana. She also served as the chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa from 2018 to 2024.

She was the founding dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research, the dean of the Faculty of Arts, the dean of the Board of Graduate Studies, and the head of the English department at the same university.

In addition to being the chair of the Africa Board and the immediate past president of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE), she was Ghana’s minister of education from 2013 to 2017.
