The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has convened an urgent meeting with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) due to numerous reports that prepaid electricity units are depleting more quickly than projected.

The Commission stated it made the decision following numerous public complaints and media accounts regarding the swift exhaustion of prepaid units after the latest tariff changes under the Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO).

In a letter from February 25, 2026, PURC expressed that the matter presents significant regulatory, technical, and consumer protection issues. The Commission remarked that the situation might influence public trust in the nation’s electricity metering and vending systems.

Consequently, PURC has arranged an urgent meeting with ECG for Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 12:00 PM. The gathering will occur at the PURC GNAT Office located in Accra.

The Commission states that ECG must provide a detailed technical presentation on the implementation of the revised tariff in the prepaid vending and metering system.

ECG is anticipated to provide a report detailing any modifications made to system settings, configurations, or conversion procedures related to the tariff adjustment.

‎‎In addition, the power distributor will provide details on vending data trends, meter update procedures, the number and nature of complaints received from customers, and steps taken so far to address the concerns.

PURC has further asked ECG to outline any immediate technical and communication measures that may be needed to protect consumers and maintain trust in the electricity billing system.

‎The outcome of the meeting is expected to determine the next steps in addressing the concerns of electricity consumers across the country.

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has instructed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to look into numerous consumer complaints regarding the unusually rapid exhaustion of prepaid electricity credits.

In a message shared on X, the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Richmond Rockson, stated that the Ministry has acknowledged the increasing worries expressed by customers nationwide about their prepaid meters functioning at lightning speed.

He revealed that the sector Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has directed ECG to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the issue and present a report within seven days to guide subsequent actions.

“The Minister of Energy and Green Transition Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor has taken notice of these complaints and has directed ECG to investigate and provide a report to him within 7 days for further action,” the statement added.
