Protesters holding a three-day demonstration under the hashtags #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow have demanded that the government, specifically the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, put an immediate stop to all mining activities in the nation.

The organization claims that there is no denying the destruction brought about by galamsey, or illicit mining, and that the results are disastrous.

Speaking on Friday, October 4, during the protest’s second day, the main organizer emphasized that the pressing threat that galamsey posed to Ghanaians’ lives—especially the lives of the youth was the driving force for their action.

“As we said yesterday we are here today and where we are going today is that we are asking that they put a stop to all galamsey and unsafe illegal and legal activities that turn to destroy our water and our land,” he said.

“We are going to say today that the Ministry of Land and Land Resources put a ban on all legal and illegal activities that are destroying our lands,” he stated.

In addition, the organization voiced its displeasure with a recent declaration made by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) about lower water turbidity levels in the Central Region.

They rejected the GWCL’s statement as “shared politics,” claiming it ignores the more significant problem of the government’s commitment to combating galamsey.
