Real Madrid have opted to dismiss manager Xabi Alonso effective immediately after losing to Barcelona in the Spanish Supercup final. Alonso joined in the summer, yet has faced difficulties in motivating a change in performance since his arrival at the club.
Madrid revealed the information on Monday after their loss to Barcelona in the Supercopa de España final on Sunday, via a club statement.
“Real Madrid C. F. wishes to announce that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his time as first team coach to an end.
“Xabi Alonso will always carry the affection and admiration of all Madridistas because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.
“We would like to thank Xabi Alonso and all his coaching staff for their hard work and dedication throughout this time, and wish them the best of luck in this new stage of their lives,” the statement said.
While the board does not think Alonso is entirely responsible for the current predicament, reports indicate they are dissatisfied with the team’s image and latest results, as Los Blancos sit 4 points behind the La Liga leaders, Barcelona.
Moreover, there are worries that a large portion of the dressing room lacks a strong bond with the coach and his philosophy.
Alvaro Arbeloa, the ex-fullback for Real Madrid and Liverpool, replaces Alonso right away.
