The government has been cautioned by the irate Civil and Local Government Staff of Ghana (CLOGSAG) not to engage in talks with its leadership about the current strike.
Since February 20, 2025, CLOGSAG has been on strike in opposition to Samuel Adom Botchway’s appointment as the Registrar of the Birth and Death Registry.
Prince Latif Oyekunle, the Public Relations Officer for the Aggrieved CLOGSAG members, called the strike “self-serving and self-centered” and unimportant during a news conference in Accra on Monday, March 3. He encouraged the government to resist caving in to the association’s demands.
In order to maintain the efficient running of public services and government, he also urged the association’s members to ignore the strike order and resume their responsibilities.
Mr. Oyekunle added that some association members continued to deliver services, proving the strike had not had the intended effect.
“The strike’s failure was an indication that the CLOGSAG interim national executives had lost touch with the challenges confronting the ordinary people,” he stated.
Accordingly, he emphasized, “We implore the government to refrain from engaging in any negotiations with CLOGSAG leadership regarding this self-serving strike as it has already lost its relevance and died a natural death.”
There are more urgent problems, Mr. Oyekunle added, and CLOGSAG’s leadership needs to focus their efforts on enhancing members’ working circumstances.
This covers member welfare, improved working conditions, a suitable pension plan, financial mismanagement, and corruption and fraud.
Regarding member welfare, Mr. Oyekunle questioned why, in spite of starting multiple industrial actions over the years, CLOGSAG leadership had not succeeded in ensuring the implementation of the Enhanced Salary Structure (ESS).
“The entire ESS has turned into a mirage,” he stated, adding that we should have been able to enjoy it as early as January 2023 before it was postponed to January 2025.
Additionally, Mr. Oyekunle charged that the CLOGSAG leadership was involved in illegal actions, including as taking money from the association’s pension fund without authorization, taking illegal tier-three deductions from members’ pay, and manipulating member investment returns.
