The Mahama-led government has come under fire from Richard Ahiagbah, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) director of communications, for not keeping its pledge to remove the COVID-19 fee in the 2025 budget.
Ahiagbah questioned the government’s adherence to its campaign pledges during his appearance on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday.
Will the COVID-19 levy be repealed? That is my point. Will they take it down? “They should inform us if they are not going to remove it,” he stated.
He criticized the government’s interaction with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for what he called “theatrics,” arguing that such measures would not solve Ghanaians’ actual problems.
Additionally, Ahiagbah contended that the decision to keep the COVID-19 levy in place goes against the government’s prior pledges and places an unwarranted burden on the populace.
“The taxes he has removed—he should have removed the COVID-19 levy as well because they promised they were going to remove it. He kept it because that is what is going to close the gap for him,” he said.
The government will implement VAT reforms by the end of this year, which will entail, among other things, the removal of the COVID-19 fee, the Finance Minister stated during the 2025 budget presentation on Tuesday, March 11.
